Coolest Car You’ll Never Touch

MercedesBenzGranTur1

by Douglas Black  November 18, 2013

Auto Show season is upon us and some awesome űber, super and hypercars are taking their red carpet rides from Tokyo to Detroit, and Geneva to the City of Angels.  Yes, photographers like me will be elbowing for the best shot of these beauties.  Show patrons will queue up to sit in the drivers seats of, Lambo’s, McLaren’s  and Bughatti’s.

One maker has introduced a concept vehicle you will cannot touch or sit in, or even photograph.  Is it a top secret that CnD, TMZ, or even the NSA has not snooped out yet?  HELL no.

Mercedes-Benz AMG will launch, virtually, the Gran Turismo on the (you guessed it) PlayStations 15th Anniversary Gran Turismo v.6 next month.

With the level of realism second to none, the machines one drives while in PlayStation-land are selected by Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo series producer and President of Polyphony Digital Inc., and design studios have created futuristic designs for the series.

According to our friends at Gizmag, Based loosely on Mercedes-Benz gull-winged SLS (with elements that are also reminiscent of the Dodge Viper, Aston Martin One 77 and Bugatti Veyron), the Vision GT is outfitted (virtually) with a twin-turbocharged AMG V8 capable of 585 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb.ft) of torque. Weighing in at a scant 1,385 kg (3,053 lb) should give the concept a significant advantage against virtual Prius’ and others on track.

The sensual, muscular and suitably exaggerated design is built around an aluminum space frame with key elements in carbon fiber; because even in the virtual world, one can never have enough carbon fiber in the diet.

Mercedes reports a slightly insane weight-to-power ratio of 2.4 kg (5.3 lb) per horsepower and as braking in the virtual world is just as important as in the physical, proper AMG composite ceramic brakes are included to handle deceleration.

Auditory aspects are just as important to the GT experience as the visuals, which is why Mercedes-AMG sound team created a distinct, performance derived exhaust note for the eight exhaust pipes sticking out the Vision GT’s oversized rear end.

Mercedes-Benz notes the interior has influences from Formula 1 but with proper concept treatments such as a floating instrument panel above the steering wheel and F1 seats integrated into the footwell.

One key detail that remains distinctively Mercedes is the retro styled grille treatment. Reminiscent of the grille from the firm’s famous 1952 300 SL, the Vision GT’s frontal area features LED lights that can alter patterns throughout the race. The design is actually an extension of the diamond grille introduced into Mercedes new A-class vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept will be a part of the initial GT6 release with other designs introduced over time via online updates.

A 1:1-scale model of the Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo will be unveiled at the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Center in California this week, but unfortunately this design looks set to remain a virtual reality.

The Quintessence of Everything

This Blog is not meant to be a marketing stooge for any particular brand, but I think this short video for the new Porsche 911 RSR speaks volumes of truth.  It is more of a homage to the romance of the nameplate than it is a marketing deployment.  Enjoy, my friends.

TESLA Downshift

TESLA X
TESLA X

by Douglas Black, enerficiency On The Road, march 11, 2013

In an attempt to fly below the radar of auto bloggers like me, Tesla buried a kernel in its recent annual report; the Model X won’t be arriving any time this year. The gull-winged SUV model has been pushed back to a late 2014 release, as the S model  will be the e-sportscar maker’s focus for the time being, report my friends at engadget.com.

The company, skippered by billionaire and space pioneer Elon Musk, sees “increased sales volume potential” in its Model S series.

Tesla plans to deliver some 20,000 Model S vehicles in 2013, with around 4,500 of those happening in Q1, according to their Q4 2012 report.  European purchasers can expect their deliveries in “summer” and owners in Asia will see their new Tesla S series “late this year”.

Musk also told investors that it plans to “spend significantly less on capital expenditures” in 2013 compared to 2012, helping to (hopefully) generate “slightly positive net income on a non-GAAP basis” in Q1 2013.

This is all better news than the recent NYT brouhaha involving battery range and tow trucks.  I personally had a Tesla experience that was rather positive, although I did not do the driving.   Read more about my recent e-car rally in Chicago.

Sit In A Stingray

No Google Glasses Needed

Seven Gen Stingrays
Seven Gen Stingrays

The2014 Corvette Stingray, Unveiled at the 2013 NAIAS ( Detroit Auto Show) in January, is making headlines at every appearance.

Only the seventh model year that Chevrolet has granted the moniker symbolic for speed since Corvette’s debut in the 1950’s, the 450 horsepower American Sports Car legend, with its 6.2 liter V-8 engine, was an instant hit.  Its red carpet styling and road track performance put the Chevrolet flagship solidly in the fraternity of Lotus, Porsche and Alfa Romero.

Making its second appearance at the @ChiAutoShow  #CAS13 this week has been even better, with crowds of enthusiasts lining up for a close up view and photo op of the red stingray.

Last week during the #SMP13 ( Social Media Preview ) days, I had a chance to sit in the cockpit of the 2014 Stingray.  Luxury, performance, and winner circle are all apt descriptors that jump to the forefront when hands are on the wheel of this ‘Vette.

“One of the last decisions we made on this car was whether to call it the Stingray,” said chief engineer Tadge Juechter, indicating it was left to Ed Welburn, vice president of global design at General Motors Co., to decide whether the new Corvette was worthy of the Stingray name again.

Enerficiency On The Road and Hot Flying Rats! have exclusive sneak peek access to this fun 360 degree experience from Chevrolet and #CAS13.  Here is your chance to sit in the cockpit of the 2014 Corvette Stingray.
