by Douglas Black, February 8, 2014 Growing up in northern latitudes I learned a thing or two which never seem to change. Blue is much deeper against fresh fallen snow. Driving in winter is challenging. And you can count on one star to guide you no matter what.
The 2014 Chicago Auto Show was the platform for another great unveiling. With the debut of Volvo’s all-new 2015 S60 and V60 Polestar models, the brand from Scandinavia proves it still leads the way in design and engineering.
“Volvo decided it was time to introduce a production road car with racecar DNA”, said Volvo President NA Tony Nicolosi of this iconic brand associated with solid safety for decades.
Developed from 17 years of motorsport experience, and sharing DNA with the 508 horsepower Volvo S60 Polestar Concept Car.
Hans Baath of Polestar, the company responsible for turning the Swedish brand into racing contenders since 1996, led the way with a particular point of reference – “If a racing team got a chance to design a production car, what would it be like?”
“Driveability. For all weather, all roads, all seasons,” is how Baath put it in a press conference at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show.
These 345hp 3.0-liter inline six cylinder models come standard with six-speed automatic transmissions, and excel in performance hitting 0-60 in just 4.7 seconds. An electronically limited top speed is 155 mph, making these the fastest factory-issued Volvos ever.
Both the S60 Polestar (3,538 lbs) and V60 Polestar (3,790 lbs) editions come fully-loaded, with upgrades to chassis and suspension. Ohlins shock absorbers, massive disc brakes and Brembo calipers are included.
“And what is most important about handling?” asked Baath. “Tires, tires, tires, and tires”, he said smiling as if holding a royal flush.
Born from endurance racing, Michelin Pilot® Super Sport tires rolling on 20-inch rims was the clear choice for Baath and his team at Volvo.
There will be a limited number S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar production road cars initially available for sale to the U.S. market, only 120 in total.
Dealers will be taking orders in the spring for deliveries later this fall when buyers will have their choice of Black Sapphire metallic or Rebel Blue, two color choices that really let these dynamic performance models shine, day or night.
I personally like that Polestar Rebel Blue.
